How to Elope in Mendocino

If you're dreaming about eloping on the Northern California coast, look no further than Mendocino. With dramatic cliffs, peaceful redwood groves, and rocky beaches, it's one of the most naturally romantic places to get married.

Many couples come here because they are seeking a simple, meaningful, and beautiful ceremony- without the stress of a big wedding.

Here's my guide to eloping on the Mendocino coast:

step 1: Decide What Kind of Elopement You Want

Every couple imagines their day a little differently. Some want a quiet ceremony overlooking the ocean, while others picture saying their vows surrounded by redwoods.

Some options include:

  • Cliffside ceremony at sunset at Cypress Grove

  • Redwood elopement in Jackson State Demonstration Forest or Navarro River Redwoods State Park

  • Private coastal property ceremony on the Caspar Headlands

  • A simple "just us" moment on a secluded beach with toes in the sand

You really don't need a big production to have a be

step 2: Choose the Best Time of Year

Mendocino is beautiful year-round, but some seasons are especially popular for elopements for warmer temperatures and stellar sunsets

Best months for eloping here:

  • May

  • June

  • September

  • October

These months usually have:

  • Ideal coastal light

  • Fewer crowds

  • Comfortable temperatures

Early Fall on coast is offers the most romantic golden hour sunsets!

step 3: Book your lodging

To legally marry in California, you'll need a valid marriage license, issued from any county clerk's office in the state

Choosing the right place to stay is one of the most enjoyable parts of planning an elopement or intimate wedding on the Mendocino Coast. Our coastline offers everything from oceanfront inns and historic boutique hotels to cozy cabins tucked into the redwoods. Each area has its own personality, and couples can easily find a setting that matches the mood of their celebration.

Mendocino Village

Mendocino is known for its dramatic ocean bluffs, Victorian architecture, and walkable charm. Many inns here offer ocean‑view rooms, fireplaces, and private decks—perfect for a romantic getaway. Staying in the village means you’re steps from restaurants, galleries, trails, and some of the most iconic ceremony locations on the coast.

My favorite Inns here include:

  • Agate Cove Inn

  • Sea Rock Inn

  • Nicholson House

Little River

Just south of Mendocino, Little River offers a quieter, more secluded feel while still being close to everything. Lodging ranges from cliffside resorts to forested cottages. It’s a great choice for couples who want privacy, spa amenities, or easy access to beaches and state parks.

Suggestions include:

  • Little River Inn

  • Heritage House Resort

  • SCP Mendocino Inn & Farm

Fort Bragg

Fort Bragg provides a wider range of lodging options, from oceanfront hotels to budget‑friendly stays. It’s home to Glass Beach, Noyo Harbor, and miles of coastal trails. Couples who want convenience, walkability, and access to local dining often choose to stay here.

I recommend:

  • Ocean View Lodge

  • Surf & Sand Lodge

  • The Beachcomber Motel

step 4: Get Your California Marriage License

To legally marry in California, you'll need a valid marriage license, issued from any county clerk's office in the state

You'll need:

  • Valid ID's

  • The application

  • The license fee

I help couples understand how this works so there aren't any surprises

A marriage license is valid for 90 days from the date it was issued

step 5: Keep the Day Simple

The most memorable elopements on the Mendocino coast usually include:

  • A short, yet meaningful ceremony

  • Beautiful florals

  • Photos during the golden hour

  • Time to actually enjoy the moment together

Keep the day relaxed and stress-free by choosing an all-in-one elopement package

rather than planning things separately

step 6: Work with Someone Local

This can make the biggest difference in the ease of your big day!

Working with someone local who knows:

  • The best ceremony spots

  • The best ceremony time for light and weather

  • A back-up plan if needed!

At Marry Me Mendo, I help to make everything easier!
